So when we say we are looking for a Senior Project Manager, yes, we want someone who is eloquent, well organized, empathetic with exceptional skills in project management, communication, coaching, and relationship building.  We also need a team member who will provide team leadership and do what it takes to help us deliver successful projects and maintain a collaborative and learning-oriented company culture.

What you might do on any given day:

  • Validate and improve upon the approach for a given project including defining roles, stakeholder involvement, risks, dependencies, deliverables, review and approval processes, and anticipated milestone dates. Support project leads in adjusting throughout the course of the project.

  • Work with stakeholders and subject matter experts on the client side, as well as internal team members, to understand, document and manage the scope of work for a given project.

  • Review and improve upon project governance and project management documentation produced by other project managers, such as project plans, schedules, communications plans, risk registers, status updates, critical paths, etc.

  • Foster analytical thinking and collaborate with our internal team to conduct work breakdowns, identify necessary resources, and collect estimates regarding time and complexity of tasks.

  • Provide appropriate coaching, direction and delegation to project team members, including other project managers.

  • Produce materials and leadership that furthers the skills and learning of team members through participation in our internal project management community.

  • Help project teams manage client expectations around timelines, deliverables, and scope of work with sophistication to set up both clients and internal teams for success.

  • Oversee all client communications from the project team, including providing timely and accurate status updates.

  • Monitor delivery progress and determine if teams have the velocity, skills, and tools to execute work according to the current project plan, and continuously assess the need to change tactics or supplement personnel.

  • Can work quickly and deftly to understand what the current moment or situation needs, and are able to then coach the team to respond appropriately with a document, email or meeting that pushes the effort forward. 

  • Have a positive yet practical attitude. You are willing to take on any task that might help move one of our projects a little further.

This position might not be for you if you:

  • Don’t like to be the one to keep track of the bigger picture or the details.

  • Struggle to stay organized, identify the steps to get to a bigger goal, or outline a necessary sequence of activities.

  • Would prefer to avoid a difficult situation or conflict with clients or teams rather than having an honest and compassionate conversation to find a positive resolution.

  • Are not comfortable with both providing and receiving feedback, direction, coaching, or task delegation.

  • Prefer to determine what’s right for the client or team on your own, without taking their input or feedback into account.

  • Are looking for a team to execute your personal vision, process, and ideas rather than using a collaborative and adaptive approach, relying on your team members capabilities and recommendations.

  • Aren't comfortable working directly with clients and users, and not willing to travel to Maryland or D.C. to meet with them in person.

  • Work better in structured environments or have trouble with ambiguity and uncertainty.
